Bath saltsIt’s little wonder that natural hot springs have been valued for their health benefits throughout history. The combination of naturally occurring salts and minerals with warm water has been cherished throughout the centuries for the ability to counteract a wide variety of health problems.

Fast-forward to the modern world, and a soak in warm water can still be a wonderfully restorative treat – for tired and heavy limbs, or sore and achy joints. Hot soaks are also ideal for overcoming mental stress and fatigue, as well as restoring revived and youthful-looking skin.  While natural springs may be hard to come by, their benefits are easy to recreate at home.

Soothing soreness, aches and pains

Mineral soaks are a great way to treat pain resulting from intense physical activity, such as mild sports injuries and long periods of physical work , but are also effective in combatting long term pain issues, such as painful inflamed joints and fibromyalgia. Epsom salts dissolved in warm water easily recreate the hot spring environment, and will improve circulation, reduce inflammation and encourage the body to absorb more nutrients. In combination with warm water, minerals are very effective at reducing stiffness in joints and muscles.

For maximum effect, adding a few drops of essential oils to the water will bring together all the senses, for a truly relaxing and reviving treat. Eucalyptus and rosemary are both renowned for their energising and health boosting properties, ideal especially around flu-season. Saint Grape’s exotic Himalayan Pink Salts are a tantalising combination of mineral salts and pure essential oils, which relax and nourish the body.

Tackle dry, tired skin

While soaking in salty water may not sound like the most moisturising of activities, mineral salts actually encourage skin to absorb more nutrients and generate a more effective way of hydration. Microscopic salts also exfoliate the skin naturally, by removing dead skin cells from the epidermis, making them an effective natural remedy for skin conditions such as eczema.

For a fragrant and attractive bath time treat, adding dried flowers and essential oils can enhance the experience. Dried rose petals bring a romantic touch, but also act as a natural gentle cleanser, while citrus rinds and green tea bags can boost the water’s anti-oxidant properties, helping tired skin to replenish lost nutrients.
